Additive Manufacturing in Construction
AMC TRR 277

#11 Quarterly meeting at the AMC – quo vadis?

-english version below-

#11 Quarterly meeting at the AMC – quo vadis?

In mid-October, around 80 scientists from the Collaborative Research Centre / Transregio 277 – Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) met at their 11th quarterly meeting to present and discuss the current status of the projects. The focus was not only on – What has the AMC achieved so far? but especially on – What are the AMC’s next goals?

Central aspects of the meeting were especially the established and newly developed networks between the individual projects and the planning of several concrete joint demonstration objects, so-called demonstrators. The expansion of the existing networks and the development of the demonstrators go hand in hand and strengthen the cooperation of the three focus areas of the AMC. The process and material-oriented projects of Focus Area A realise these concise demonstration objects together with the simulation and modelling projects of Focus Area B, as well as with the planning processes and construction projects of Focus Area C. The aim is to jointly develop a wide variety of large-scale constructions and to illustrate the possibilities of the 3D printing process for the construction industry. Using these large-scale demonstrators as an example, the AMC’s research will become tangible and a wide variety of use cases will become understandable.

In the course of the 11th quarterly meeting, the AMC annual general meeting was also held. The main topic of this general meeting was the new orientation and focus of the Transregio for the upcoming second funding phase. In spring 2023, the German Research Foundation will take stock of the AMC’s research to date and review the programme for the next four years. For the developed research programme of the AMC, the Members´Meeting was enriched by 10 outstanding scientists. The AMC warmly welcomes the newcomers and looks forward to working with Freek Bos, Pierluigi D’Acunto, Ralf Jänicke, Anna Keune, Vittoria Laghi, Alisa Machner, Inka Mai, Charlotte Thiel, Julian Unglaub and Roland Wüchner.

“I am excited about the collaboration in the Collaborative Research Centre and look forward to a promising exchange. The AMC is currently and will in the future be even more focused on one of the most urgent topics of our time: How can technological progress be used to build in a digitally and ecologically sustainable way, thereby reducing environmental impacts and saving resources? I am looking forward being part of this process and contributing to it with my research. It makes my researcher’s heart beat faster,” says Charlotte Thiel, professor at the Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg specialising in sustainability assessments in construction and new AMC-member.

Braunschweig/München, October 2022

About the AMC:

The Collaborative Research Center Transregio TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) aims to fundamentally research additive manufacturing (3D printing) as a novel digital manufacturing technology for construction. In the interdisciplinary, cross-location research project, the two universities TU Braunschweig and TU Munich, pursue the novel manufacturing approach for the construction industry. Additive manufacturing can develop into a key technology for the digitalization of the construction industry. Complex research questions on materials, process engineering, control, modeling, design and construction are being investigated holistically by scientists from the fields of civil and mechanical engineering.
