Prof. Dr. Michela Turrin AMC-MERCATOR-FELLOW

Prof. Dr. Michela Turrin is Associate Professor of Design Informatics at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of Delft University of Technology, where she leads the Digital Technologies Section – which brings together computational design and geomatics, proposing an integrated approach between context and design. Her work focuses on computational methods to inform design decisions on technical and human-aware scenarios, with focus on buildings to building components - Additive Manufacturing being key enabler. For a decade, she led the research at LAMA, Lab for Additive Manufacturing in Architecture - which focuses on the full-scale production of architectural components through integrated design, rationalisation, prototyping, analysis, and validation. Currently appointed as an AMC Mercator Fellow within the TRR277 “Additive Manufacturing in Construction,” her research on performance-driven design, with ML-supported, simulation-driven, multi-objective optimisation workflows shifts Additive Manufacturing from mere fabrication to a strategy for functional, integrated design. At LAMA, she has led pioneering projects such as Spong3D, an adaptive façade panel with integrated air cavities and fluid channels for thermal storage, Double Face, featuring computationally optimised and AM-fabricated Trombe wall elements that encapsulate PCM and aerogel, and, more recently, Wood-Without-Trees, an innovative process towards wood-based extruded building components. She leads DigiPedia, an open education platform on computational methods, which includes a section on digital fabrication and additive manufacturing, broadly used by industry besides academia. Currently, she leads PLAIA, bringing together industry and academia on AI and soft values for architecture, exploring perceptual aspects. Across these and other interdisciplinary initiatives, she collaborates with industry and academia, pioneering performance-informed computational design to deliver customised, high-performing architectural components.
