Building the Future – Insights from the AMC – TRR 277 Symposium at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

On March 31 and April 1, 2025, the AMC – TRR 277 Symposium Building the Future: From “Form Follows Function” to “Form Follows Material” took place at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. More than 100 participants from research and industry gathered to discuss the latest advancements in digital design, robotic fabrication, and material-driven construction.

The symposium was opened by Prof. Dr. Stefan Kollmannsberger, who organized the event in collaboration with the Collaborative Research Center AMC. This was followed by a welcome address from Prof. Peter Benz, President of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The keynote lectures featured leading experts, including Prof. Dr. Kathrin Dörfler and Prof. Dr. Harald Kloft, who introduced the Collaborative Research Center AMC, focusing on 3D printing in construction.

Throughout the two-day event, speakers from renowned institutions such as MIT, Bauhaus Dessau, MFPA, Brüninghoff Group, and SOPHISTIK AG presented their latest research and perspectives on the future of construction. Highlights included Prof. Caitlin T. Mueller (MIT) on digital structures, Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing. (FH) Frank Steffens (Brüninghoff Group) on innovations in construction, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Carsten Könke (MFPA) on resource-efficient building methods.

A special moment of the symposium was the exclusive guided tour at the Bauhaus Museum Weimar, which opened its doors just for the participants. This visit provided a unique perspective on the historical influence of Bauhaus principles and their relevance to today’s advancements in digital and robotic construction.

The event concluded with a group photo and a heartfelt thank you to all speakers, participants, and organizers. The symposium not only highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration but also set the stage for future discussions on how material properties and advanced fabrication methods are reshaping the built environment.

About TRR 277 AMC:

The Collaborative Research Center TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) is dedicated to advancing research in the field of construction, with a focus on leveraging 3D printing technology to revolutionize sustainable and energy-efficient building practices. Through innovation and collaboration, the center aims to usher in a new era for the construction industry. In the interdisciplinary, cross-location and dfg-funded research project, the two universities TU Braunschweig and TU Munich, pursue the novel manufacturing approach for the construction industry. Additive manufacturing can develop into a key technology for the digitalization of the construction industry. Complex research questions on materials, process engineering, control, modeling, design and construction are being investigated holistically by scientists from the fields of civil and mechanical engineering.
