The Collaborative Research Center TRR 277 pioneers the Future of Construction with 3D Printing
The Collaborative Research Center TRR 277 AMC is excited to announce its upcoming event, the First Funding Period Closing Conference, scheduled to take place from October 9th to 11th, 2023. The conference, held at TU Braunschweig’s Audimax, showcases the remarkable research outcomes from the initial four years of the DFG-funded Transregio project, featuring a keynote speech by Achim Menges.
TRR 277 AMC’s research is centered around the future of Digital Building, emphasizing resource-efficient and energy-efficient construction methods enabled by 3D printing technology. This innovative approach not only redefines traditional construction practices but also offers new design freedoms by integrating material, process, and design considerations.
Presenting a comprehensive overview of the research accomplishments, the AMC Conference provides an exceptional opportunity for a diverse audience to engage with the outcomes of TRR 277 AMC’s dedicated efforts. The event will feature presentations across the Research Areas of the TRR 277 AMC, Focus Areas A, which explore combinations of materials and processes, Focus Area B, which focuses on Computational Modelling and Control, and Focus Area C, which investigates Design and Construction related to the implementation of additive manufacturing in the process chain of design and construction.
A significant highlight of the conference will be the keynote addresses by visionaries, including Keynote by Ana Anton and Benjamin Dillenburger from ETH Zürich and Achim Menges, Spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC at the University of Stuttgart and Leibniz-Award winner 2023 for his outstanding work in architecture. These luminaries will share insights that promise to inspire new conversations and revolutionize the future of construction.
In addition to thought-provoking discussions, participants will have the unique opportunity to experience 1:1 scale demonstrators, providing a hands-on understanding of the groundbreaking advancements made possible by 3D printing technology.
Helga Blocksdorf and Norman Hack (both TU Braunschweig) will shed light on teaching 3D-printing technologies and how architecture can utilize them for entirely new design opportunities in their lecture titled “From Additive Manufacturing to Architecture.”
Harald Kloft, Spokesperson of TRR 277 AMC, expressed, “Our research at TRR 277 AMC represents a paradigm shift in the construction industry, where 3D printing technology allows us to push the boundaries of sustainable and energy-efficient building practices.” Kathrin Dörfler, Co-Spokesperson, added, “We believe that 3D printing not only transforms the way we build but also aligns with the modern construction industry’s sustainable and social aspirations. This conference is a platform to learn, collaborate, and pioneer change.”
On the third day, the AMC Conference will leave the presentation rooms, and all participants will have the chance to explore the forefront of construction technology. TRR 277 AMC will host AMC Lab Tours with visits to the labs of “Digitale Baustelle,” “Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory,” and “Mobile Robots” at the institute iBMB.
Attendance for the entire conference is free of charge, with TRR 277 AMC kindly requesting attendees to register using the provided form (Link). The Transregio warmly invites everybody who is interested in participating, as this will undoubtedly enhance the discourse at this event.

About TRR 277 AMC:
The Collaborative Research Center TRR 277 Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) is dedicated to advancing research in the field of construction, with a focus on leveraging 3D printing technology to revolutionize sustainable and energy-efficient building practices. Through innovation and collaboration, the center aims to usher in a new era for the construction industry. In the interdisciplinary, cross-location and dfg-funded research project, the two universities TU Braunschweig and TU Munich, pursue the novel manufacturing approach for the construction industry. Additive manufacturing can develop into a key technology for the digitalization of the construction industry. Complex research questions on materials, process engineering, control, modeling, design and construction are being investigated holistically by scientists from the fields of civil and mechanical engineering.
