AMC Enters Second Funding Phase

The collaborative project “Additive Manufacturing in Construction” (AMC), explores new perspectives for the construction industry.

Research on 3D printing in construction at the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich receives four more years of funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

3D printing methods for building with clay and flood protection

Challenges in Traditional Construction:

Conventional construction processes are characterized by inefficient material usage, high environmental impact, and stagnant productivity. With a growing global population and an increasing demand for housing, the construction industry is reaching its limits. Faced with these challenges and the global significance of the construction sector as a major contributor to CO2 emissions with substantial resource consumption, the question for the future is central: How can we create more housing and infrastructure with less material and lower emissions?

This is what the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277 “Additive Manufacturing in Construction” (AMC) at TU Braunschweig and TU Munich is researching. The German Research Foundation has now extended funding for the research network on 3D printing in construction.

Rethinking construction

“The continuation of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre on 3D printing in construction marks a significant step towards an innovative and sustainable future for the construction industry,” says Angela Ittel, President of TU Braunschweig. “The research group sets standards for excellence in construction technology and is actively shaping the transformation of the construction industry through advanced 3D printing technologies. The ongoing cooperation between the two universities not only successfully deepens transregional, interdisciplinary research, but also promotes the transfer of knowledge and technology.”

“3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is the key digital technology for the construction sector. This technology not only enables the layer-by-layer construction of components in three-dimensional form as with conventional 3D printing, but also seamlessly integrates material and manufacturing process. This means that we are rethinking construction: which material can be used to produce which component most effectively using which 3D printing process? Digitally controlled additive manufacturing processes thus open up new productive and environmentally friendly construction methods for the construction industry,” explains Professor Harald Kloft, spokesperson for the Collaborative Research Centre.

The chance for a large impact

In the first four years of the research network, the scientists have created the conditions for applying additive manufacturing on a large scale in the construction industry – such as research into various 3D printing technologies, ways of integrating the reinforcement or integrating 3D printing into the construction process chain. In the second funding period, subtitled “The opportunity of large impact”, the research programme will be expanded. In concrete construction in particular, the future task is to reduce component masses and produce the necessary binding agents, which turn concrete into concrete in the first place, with low energy consumption and emissions. Clay as an earth-based material with innovative robotic processes is also included in the research programme. These processes offer new possibilities, for example in landscape infrastructure construction, such as flood protection. In one sub-project, the researchers want to quantify the ecological aspect of additive manufacturing in particular and optimise it using analytical life cycle assessment methods.

“Additive manufacturing is a scalable technology with global impact potential that enables more efficient, sustainable and customised buildings. Our sub-projects are methodologically very strongly characterised by experimentation and require highly interdisciplinary collaboration between our scientists from civil engineering, architecture and mechanical engineering,” says co-spokesperson Kathrin Dörfler.
The research results of Transregio 277 AMC have the potential to fundamentally change the construction industry. The aim is to use 3D printing technologies to combine the requirements of economy and ecology and make construction more productive, environmentally friendly and affordable.

Take a look at all the highlights of the TRR 277 AMC projects. The videos show the project and their achievements of the entire first four years at a glance. In short presentations you will learn about the main findings, collaborations and gain an overview of the publications and the people behind the projects.

This overview was produced at the last AMC Conference in October 2023. The AMC Conference focused on the future of construction with 3D printing technologies. Researchers from the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich, part of TRR 277 AMC, aim to make construction more resource-efficient, lower-emission, and economical through innovative 3D printing processes. The conference provided insights into AMC’s research areas, including materials and processes, computer-aided modeling and control, and design and construction. Furthermore Keynote speaker Professor Achim Menges emphasizes a paradigm shift in environmentally friendly and economical construction.

Sessions
The Collaborative Research Centre AMC explores the digitalization of construction, using 3D printing to combine economic and ecological requirements. The approach involves digitally controlled planning and layering, optimizing shape and significantly reducing resource consumption and CO2 emissions. Professors Kloft and Dörfler highlight the potential of additive manufacturing to reshape construction practices sustainably. In addition the conference featured visionary keynotes from experts at ETH Zurich and the University of Stuttgart. Finally, Professors Blocksdorf and Hack discussed the integration of 3D printing in architecture for innovative design possibilities. Collaborative demonstrators, showcasing 3D-printed building objects, were presented during the event, too.

Buildings are part of our cultural development. New technologies are now needed to make construction more environmentally friendly, faster and more economical. Scientists at the AMC Collaborative Research Centre see additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, as a key digital technology for the construction of the future. On 23 October, the scientists showed Lower Saxony’s Minister President Stephan Weil how they are conducting fundamental research into 3D printing together.

“Research from Lower Saxony is a real driver of innovation, as I was once again able to see for myself today at the TU Braunschweig. New technologies are being developed here that make construction more environmentally friendly, faster and more economical – a real milestone,” says Stephan Weil, Minister President of Lower Saxony. [this quote has been translated from German and shortened; you can find the original at the following link]

Research centre for digital building fabrication

The quadrupling of the world’s population over the past 100 years has made the construction industry a global driver of resource consumption and environmental pollution.
At the same time, the construction industry is suffering from stagnating productivity and construction is barely affordable for customers. While other industrial sectors such as car manufacturing have continuously integrated technological developments into their production over the decades, construction sites are still predominantly characterised by labour-intensive manual techniques.

This is where the scientists at the Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) collaborative research centre come in. In contrast to manual construction techniques, 3D printing involves building up a component layer by layer and giving it its three-dimensional form: mould construction, industrial pre-processes or complex adaptation processes for semi-finished products such as blanks are not required. “At the dawn of the digital age, we have a great opportunity to use 3D printing to pave the way for a paradigm shift in the construction industry, namely to focus on the value of the material and not on labour costs due to outdated construction techniques. Additive manufacturing has the potential to become a key digital construction technology to make building more productive, environmentally friendly and affordable,” says Professor Harald Kloft, Head of the Institute of Structural Design (ITE) and spokesperson for the Collaborative Research Centre.

TU Braunschweig has already been researching 3D printing processes for the construction industry for ten years and has thus established itself as a research centre for digital construction fabrication.

Digital construction fabrication centre: “Rethinking buildings from scratch”

But what does this look like in practice? Minister President Stephan Weil was given an insight into this in the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory (DBFL). The large-scale research facility, which is 16 metres long and nine metres wide, is a digital building fabrication centre. It includes a CNC milling machine, a six-axis robotic arm and an automated concrete mixing plant. Here, components – such as walls, columns, ceilings and bridges – are printed on a 1:1 scale and the interactions between material, process and moulding are researched: “3D printing enables us to rethink buildings from scratch. More resource-efficient, lower-emission, efficient and with new creative freedom for architecture,” says Norman Hack, Professor of Digital Construction at ITE.

Concrete, steel, clay

Using the DBFL, the scientists not only print concrete, but also steel and clay, build up the material in layers, inject it with a robotic arm, as in the shotcrete 3D printing process, or inject strands of material into a carrier medium to create filigree structures. “The interaction of material and 3D printing processes is of fundamental importance for the quality of the printed components,” says Dirk Lowke, Professor at the Centre for Building Materials and Materials Testing at TU Munich. The scientists also showed how concrete components from existing buildings to be demolished can be reused. Here, real-digital process chains help to extract concrete components from existing buildings and reuse them as “secondary components”. Research is also being conducted into the use of precision formwork made from 100 per cent recyclable industrial waxes. The wax can be melted down again and offers completely new forms of formwork.

“The achievements of the DFG Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277 ‘Additive Manufacturing in Construction’ are forward-looking for the construction industry and society. The work of this highly efficient research area will fundamentally revolutionise the construction industry,” summarises the President of TU Braunschweig, Angela Ittel. “The research group is also an outstanding example of how successful and enriching cross-university and interdisciplinary collaboration can be. We are also planning to expand this collaboration in the future. Together with the Technical University of Munich, for example, we have launched an outline for a joint Cluster of Excellence to investigate further research into new construction technologies and their integration into the economy and society.” [quote has been translated from german]

Digitales Baufrabrikationszentrum: „Bauwerke ganz neu denken“

Instead of brick on brick built by hand, layer by layer 3D printed with a robot. This is what the future of building could look like. The first buildings in Germany are already standing, and the largest printed building in Europe was recently completed in Heidelberg. At the Technical University of Braunschweig and the Technical University of Munich, scientists of TRR 277 AMC are researching new 3D printing processes to make the construction of the future more resource-efficient, lower-emission and more economical. The AMC had now presented its research results. The keynote speaker was Leibniz Prize winner Professor Achim Menges, spokesperson for the IntCDC Cluster of Excellence (Digital Technologies for Design and Construction of the Future) at the University of Stuttgart.

The research of the Collaborative Research Centre “Additive Manufacturing in Construction” of TU Braunschweig and TU Munich focuses on the digitalisation of construction – with the aim of combining the requirements of economy and ecology through 3D printing technologies. With the help of digital processes, building materials can be used more efficiently and significantly less of them can be consumed. Through digitally controlled planning and layering, the material is applied only where it is structurally needed, without the need for moulds or other aids. The result is shape-optimised components that significantly reduce resource consumption and CO2 emissions. Additive manufacturing also offers new design freedom for architecture.

Paradigm shift in the construction industry

“Our research at the AMC represents a paradigm shift in the construction industry, where we can use 3D printing technologies to push the boundaries of environmentally friendly and economical construction,” emphasises Professor Harald Kloft, spokesperson for the Collaborative Research Centre. And Professor Kathrin Dörfler, co-spokesperson from TU Munich, adds: “We believe that additive manufacturing technology is not only changing the way we build, but is also in line with the sustainable and social aspirations of the modern construction industry. This conference is a platform to learn, collaborate and drive change.”

The conference in the Audimax of the TU Braunschweig gave an overview of all research areas of the AMC: materials and processes, computer-aided modelling and control, design and construction.

Three scientists who are among the visionaries of digital building fabrication were won for the keynotes: Dr Ana Anton and Professor Benjamin Dillenburger from ETH Zurich, as well as Professor Achim Menges, spokesperson for the IntCDC cluster of excellence at the University of Stuttgart and winner of the Leibniz Prize 2023 for his outstanding work in architecture.

Professor Helga Blocksdorf and Professor Norman Hack (both TU Braunschweig) highlighted the teaching on 3D printing technologies and how architecture can use them for completely new design possibilities in their lecture “From Additive Manufacturing to Architecture”. Afterwards, several 3D-printed building objects, so-called collaborative demonstrators, were presented.

3D concrete printer lab tour

In addition to the discussions, participants had the opportunity to visit demonstrators on a 1:1 scale and thus experience first-hand the advances made possible by 3D printing technology.

Finally, the AMC conference left the presentation rooms in the Audimax and went on a Lab Tour: Participants were able to visit the “Digital Building Site”, the “Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory” (the large 3D concrete printer) and the mobile robot at the Institute for Building Materials, Solid Construction and Fire Protection (iBMB) at TU Braunschweig.
