Researchers at TU Braunschweig develop 3D-printed Spundwand Quartier: Federal Environment Minister presents prototype in Hamburg

February 2026 – An innovative environmental project from Technische Universität Braunschweig was officially presented in Hamburg last week. The so-called SpundwandQuartier was introduced and planted by Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and Hamburg’s Second Mayor Katharina Fegebank. The development was supported by the Stiftung Lebensraum Elbe within the framework of the project “Hamburg – Deine Flussnatur.”

The SpundwandQuartier is an innovative, 3D-printed habitat structure designed to ecologically enhance existing sheet pile walls without significantly altering their load-bearing infrastructure. The first prototype was developed within the research project Future Urban Coastlines at TU Braunschweig.

A new perspective on urban waterfronts

Many urban waterways are characterized by smooth, technically optimized sheet pile walls. While they stabilize embankments, they provide little habitat for plants and animals. Researchers led by institute directors Prof. Harald Kloft and Prof. Nils Goseberg address this challenge using Shotcrete 3D Printing (SC3DP). They have developed modular elements that can be integrated into existing sheet pile walls, creating new structures both below and above the waterline, without extensive reconstruction or structural intervention.
The idea is both simple and effective: not to replace existing infrastructure, but to intelligently upgrade it.

Research with direct benefits for cities and the environment

Below the water surface, the 3D-printed modules create differentiated surfaces, niches, and flow conditions that encourage the settlement of biofilms, algae, and invertebrates. Above the waterline, plantable elements provide space for flood-tolerant vegetation.
The project combines structural engineering, digital fabrication within the Collaborative Research Centre AMC TRR 277, and ecosystem research to enhance urban waterways ecologically.

Contributing to European environmental goals

The SpundwandQuartier supports the objectives of the EU Water Framework Directive and the EU Biodiversity Strategy. At the same time, the project demonstrates how innovative construction and manufacturing technologies can make tangible contributions to environmental protection and climate resilience. What began as a research prototype is intended to evolve into a transferable model for the ecological retrofitting of urban waterways.

Scientific exchange among researchers is a key driver in global efforts to make construction more resource-efficient and climate-neutral. In early November, several researchers from the Collaborative Research Centre Additive Manufacturing in Construction (AMC) travelled to South Africa to present their work at the Net-Zero Future 2025 Conference in Cape Town and to exchange ideas with international colleagues on new approaches for sustainable and low-carbon construction. Gerrit Placzek received the Best Presentation Award for his outstanding contribution.

The Net-Zero Future 2025 Conference in Cape Town brought together researchers from India, the USA, Norway, Germany, and South Africa to develop innovative strategies for sustainable and climate-neutral construction. International collaboration is essential for understanding regional and national contexts and integrating them into global strategies to mitigate climate change.

Before attending the conference, the AMC delegation visited Stellenbosch University, where they were welcomed by Prof. Gideon van Zijl and Dr. Jacques Kruger. Together, they exchanged insights on recent developments in 3D concrete printing and sustainable construction processes. The team also visited the construction company Citra, which explores innovative building techniques to help address South Africa’s housing challenges.

Afterward, the AMC researchers participated in the Net-Zero Future 2025 Conference in Cape Town. The event’s goal is to inspire and connect a new generation of engineers and researchers committed to reducing the environmental footprint of the construction industry.

AMC research highlights and an award

The AMC was strongly represented with five presentations. In addition to contributions on resource-efficient design and construction with Shotcrete 3D Printing and studies on productivity through motion data analysis, one research paper particularly stood out: Gerrit Placzek received the Best Presentation Award for his talk “Towards the Integration of Additive Manufacturing into a Cyber-Physical Construction System.”

In his presentation, Gerrit Placzek shared results developed within the Digital Concrete Workshop 2024, conducted as part of AMC’s subproject C06. The study explored how digital fabrication processes can integrate existing structures into digital workflows and adapt flexibly to real-world conditions. By combining laser scanning, augmented reality, and 3D printing, the research introduced a cyber-physical approach that opens new pathways for adaptive and resource-efficient construction. The related publication will soon be available in open access.

With its multiple presentations and active participation, AMC reaffirmed its role as a central platform for innovation, knowledge transfer, and international collaboration in the field of digital construction.

The next Net-Zero Future Conference will take place at TU Darmstadt from 30 September to 2 October 2026, bringing together researchers from around the world to shape a climate-neutral built environment. Until then, AMC extends its sincere thanks to this year’s hosts for organizing such an inspiring event.

Gerrit Placzek wurde für seinen Vortrag “Towards the Integration of Additive Manufacturing into a Cyber-Physical Construction System” mit dem Best Presentation Award ausgezeichnet.

This summer, AMC research made itself seen and experienced. From the grand opening of the Digital Construction Site to interactive demonstrations during TU Braunschweig’s Campus Xperience, several public-facing events highlighted how future construction technologies are not only being imagined, but actively built by researchers within the collaborative research center TRR 277 AMC.

A Milestone: Opening of the Digital Construction Site

On July 3, the Digital Construction Site (DCS) was officially inaugurated on TU Braunschweig’s East Campus. The research infrastructure, one of its kind worldwide, brings together cutting-edge construction robotics, large-scale 3D printing, automated concrete mixing, mobile tracking systems, and an integrated digital control center. Developed by TU Braunschweig the DCS offers a full-scale test environment where digital construction processes can be developed and tested under real-life conditions. Together with industrial partners such as COBOD, new components such as a multifunctional construction robot have been realised. This collaboration can further advance the digitalisation and automation of the construction industry.

With support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the DCS marks a major step in the transfer of AMC research from the lab to the field. Professors from construction engineering, materials science, and geodesy emphasized the significance of this milestone in their opening remarks and research showcases.

Campus Xperience: A Day for Discovery

Just two weeks earlier, AMC welcomed the broader public during TU Braunschweig’s Campus Xperience, a festival of science and innovation. Visitors of all ages had the chance to explore AMC topics firsthand through two special guided tours and an interactive workshop:

Guided tours offered deep insights into the Digital Building Fabrication Laboratory (DBFL) and the Digital Construction Site, showcasing how AMC researchers investigate automated and digitally connected construction workflows.

In the hands-on workshop, children learned about designing buildings with Tinkercad and modelled them with clay, offering a playful entry point into the logic of 3D-Printing in construction.

A Living Construction Site for Research, Teaching, and Outreach

AMC’s participation in these events is part of a growing strategy to not only conduct research at the highest level, but to make it visible, tangible, and open to dialogue: from young schoolchildren to policymakers and industry leaders.

Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to visit, collaborate, or experience AMC research in action.

So viele Events, so viel Zukunft: AMC macht Forschung sichtbar

In June 2025, around 80 researchers from the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 277 AMC gathered for the annual AMC Summer School at Lake Ammersee. Over four days, participants engaged in focused discussions, presentations, and strategic planning – bridging fundamental research and its application in the construction industry.

Focus: From Lab to Construction Site

A key theme was the question:
How can 3D printing research in construction be brought closer to real-world application?
Together, we explored:
• The role of start-ups in transferring innovation to industry
• Success factors and pitfalls in science-to-practice translation
• Timing: when is research mature enough for implementation?

Inspiring input came from pioneering start-ups including Saeki, Mesh, Hyperion Robotics, and Terrestrial Construction, who shared insights through short pitches and open Q&A sessions.

A central part of the Summer School was to define AMC’s new research focus:
Which research areas are key? How can we foster interdisciplinary collaboration and effective communication with industry, planners, and IT professionals?

Emerging priorities included:
• Resource-efficient 3D-printable materials
• On-site robotic construction methods
• Digital twins and real-time data integration
• Collaborative demonstrators and spin-offs

Dialogue, Direction – and a View from Andechs

Despite the intense schedule, there was plenty of time for informal exchange – swimming in Lake Ammersee, evening talks, and a group hike to Andechs Monastery, overlooking the landscape.

“When so many passionate researchers come together for a few days, ideas spark and minds ignite – and the outcome is always rewarding.”

A big thank you to everyone who contributed their energy and ideas. We’re already looking forward to the next AMC Summer School – with fresh momentum, new perspectives, and strong collaboration at its core.

Fokus: Forschung trifft Anwendung

We were honored to take part in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Deutsches Museum in Munich with a hands-on workshop designed to introduce children and families to the fascinating potential of 3D printing in construction. Together with Anna Keune and Ziva Simsic from Project Ö, we hosted a workshop that bridged the digital and physical worlds.

Participants first explored digital design by creating their own structures using Tinkercad in the TUMlab at the Deutsches Museum. They then brought their ideas to life using clay—translating digital creativity into tangible forms. The response exceeded all our expectations: over 300 people took part in the workshops at TUMlab, and the enthusiasm was overwhelming!

A heartfelt thank you to the Deutsches Museum for the opportunity to be part of this milestone event. Our collaboration continues to be incredibly rewarding, and we look forward to future projects together!
